At sea level the curvature of the earth limits the range of vision to 2.9 miles. The formula for determining how many miles an individual can see at higher levels is the square root of his altitude times 1.225.
At sea level, it would be 4.7 km away. If we include another variable, in addition to the curvature of the earth (which essentially is constant), and increase the height of the observer, we most definitely can increase our maximum line of sight.
How far can you see out to sea? It depends how high above the sea you are. The curvature of the earth means that, on the sea shore at a height of two metres, you can see just 5km or 3 miles.
Thanks for the question, Saskia. The “sky” actually means everything above the Earth’s surface, including space. That’s why so many stars – like our own sun, but much further away – light up the night sky. But in between our planet’s surface and outer space, there’s the atmosphere.
Approximate driving distance between Earth and Sky is 14076 kms or 8746.4 miles or 7600.5 nautical miles . Travel time refers to the time taken if the distance is covered by a car.

This process is what is believed to have initiated the movement to oxygen being present in the present atmosphere. The atmosphere, or air, was first, followed by the water.

The Earth curves about 8 inches per mile. As a result, on a flat surface with your eyes 5 feet or so off the ground, the farthest edge that you can see is about 3 miles away.

At higher altitude, the horizon is at a larger angle to the near edge of the water. This is both an effect of perspective, and because you can see farther. When the apparent distance to the horizon is larger, your brain wants it to be higher, not farther away. Because you have to raise your eye line more to look at it.
