Taking the prize as “the coldest place on Earth” right now is the South Pole in Antarctica, where temperatures are currently sitting at a cool -38. Some parts of Canada are not far behind at all, though, as Eureka in Nunavut is only four degrees warmer.
The Short Answer: Both the Arctic (North Pole) and the Antarctic (South Pole) are cold because they don’t get any direct sunlight. However, the South Pole is a lot colder than the North Pole.

We know that Antarctica can be very cold, but how warm can it get? The Antarctic Peninsula, known as Antarctica’s ‘banana belt’, can be quite mild, with annual averages around -10°C (14°F) and summer temps reaching a balmy 10°C (50°F).

Typically, the air over the Arctic Ocean, especially when the water is covered with ice, lacks the convective heat needed to generate lightning storms. … These electrical storms threaten boreal forests fringing the Arctic, as they spark fires in remote regions already baking under the round-the-clock summer sun.
New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley see the least amount of snowfall because they see warmer temperatures from the warmer ocean temperatures and the nor-easters there are mixed with rain, between 10–25 inches.

Alright, so how cold is it in Russia? If you look at Russia as a whole, the average temperature ranges from a low 18° F in the winter to a high of 75° F in the summer. The lowest recorded temperature in Russia was -90° F and the highest recorded temperature was 110° F.
The aptly named Furnace Creek currently holds the record for hottest air temperature ever recorded. The desert valley reached highs of 56.7C in the summer of 1913, which would apparently push the limits of human survival.
Antarctica. Antarctica is the most chilly continent known by the fact. One of the cities of this continent is Vostok which has a population of scientists who work inside the world’s most isolated research station. The city is located around 1,000 kilometres from the South Pole.
The average temperature on the Moon (at the equator and mid latitudes) varies from -298 degrees Fahrenheit (-183 degrees Celsius), at night, to 224 degrees Fahrenheit (106 degrees Celsius) during the day.

The most common birds in Antarctica are penguins. It is home to 18 different species, including the Emperor Penguin.
There is no international law governing the North Pole.
The waters at and surrounding the North Pole are governed by the same international laws that apply to all other oceans. And as the ice there begins to melt, the water above the seabed will remain international waters.
The current temperatures are still some distance from the coldest ever observed on the continent. In July 1983, Vostok plummeted to minus-129 degrees (minus-89.6 Celsius). Satellites have detected temperatures as low as minus-144 degrees (minus-98 Celsius).
Stephen Warren, University of Washington (8/22/2007): The world record for low temperature was set at Vostok Station, Antarctica, on 21 July 1983.

There is no evidence that any significant region of Antarctic has been cooling over the long term, except in fall. In a 2016 paper, Turner and others point out that if one considers just the last ~18 years, the trend on the Antarctic Peninsula has been cooling.
