Chihuahua
Chihuahua is Mexico’s largest state. For the most part, its relief consists of an elevated plain that slopes gently downward toward the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) in the northeast.

Olmecs
The Olmecs, Mexico’s first known society, settled on the Gulf Coast near what is now Veracruz.
Mexico is known as the land of extremes with its dense rainforests and deep canyons. Mostly covered in mountains, Mexico is famous not just for its rich natural resources but for its vibrant culture. It’s home to a great many artists and jawdropping beaches.

By the 19th century many Mexicans wanted to separate from Spain and create a sovereign government that would act on behalf of their own interests much like the movement for American independence from British rule in the late 18th century. The desire for independence from Spanish rule first formally emerged in 1810.
The natives of the country have long called it Mexico, however. The country of Mexico was named after its capital city, Mexico City. During the time of the Aztecs, their capital city was Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Today’s capital city was built on top of the ruins of the Aztec capital.
For 300 years, Mexico, then known as New Spain, was ruled as a Spanish colony.
Chiapas is Mexico’s poorest state. All of Mexico’s three poorest states are in the south of the country, which is significantly poorer than the country’s north in general.
