There are roughly 1,000 named glacial lakes in the Sierra Nevada.
The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is a separate Range from the Rocky Mountains.
The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains form the longest mountain range in North America and the second longest range in the world. They stretch 3,000 miles north-to-south from New Mexico, across the United States to Montana, and well into Canada.
The Sierra Nevada was born about 150 million years ago. They are high, though not so high as the Rockies, and their growth ended long ago. For several million years the weather has been busy wearing down their tall peaks.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range is growing at a rapid pace, says new research. The team of researchers from the University of Nevada’s geodetic laboratory in Reno and the University of Glasgow in the UK, found the mountains growing at about half an inch every 10 years.
