Floods occur for various reasons — dams bursting, intense rainfall, massive water runoff from snowmelt, storm surge from hurricanes, even impact from tornadoes.
1: Louisiana: A Red State Defined by Its History of Flooding
The state with the highest percentage of land at risk of flooding, Louisiana was the site of one of the most devastating storms in American history, Hurricane Katrina.
1. Florida – Florida faces the largest coastal flooding threat in the country. About 3.5 million people are at risk of coastal flooding across Florida’s 638 square mile coast and 1.5 million people are at risk of inland flooding.
Bangladesh is one of the most flood prone countries in the world. Floods have huge costs for Bangladesh, both in terms of lives, property, livelihoods, and development gains lost.
Causes of coastal flooding
Coastal flooding is a sudden and abrupt inundation of a coastal environment caused by a short-term increase in water level due to a storm surge and extreme tides. The magnitude and extension depend on the coastal topography, storm surge conditions and broader bathymetry of the coastal area.
Severe flooding is caused by atmospheric conditions that lead to heavy rain or the rapid melting of snow and ice. Geography can also make an area more likely to flood. For example, areas near rivers and cities are often at risk for flash floods. A flood is an overflow of water onto land that is normally dry.
One reason why some cities are more prone to floods is height of land above sea level. The mean sea level refers to the average height of the sea surface at a given site over a long period of time. Cities that are located on low-lying lands, especially those that are below sea level are more prone to floods.
